Welcome to the Population: 3 website.

No Room at the Inn

Whether it's a nativity scene or whether your looking through Paris apartments for a place to stay, things are getting a little cramped. The rapid population growth has pushed us past six billion, past six and a half billion and we are now heading towards seven billion at quite some pace.

It has taken us hundreds of generations to reach six billion yet we can push past ten billion with just a few more branches on the family tree. The population is also ageing quite considerably since we are all living much longer than we ever have before.

Whilst this may be good for library attendance figures or bums on church pews, this spells a big problem for our pension schemes and chances of an early retirement. The economy isn't built to cater for the needs of those who aren't working and we cannot work and then expect to draw a pension for 40 happy years; this just isn't possible.

Culling is out of the question of course but are there really too many people on this planet? To be perfectly fair, there isn't a big need for outcry. You can actually fit the entire population into the UK, a small part of the world once you consider the bigger picture.

So it would seem as though there is room at the Inn for everyone after all.
